This 2,000 square foot addition to an existing 1,100 square foot bungalow in the Woodland Heights area of Houston, Texas was commissioned by a builder for additional space for his growing family. As Woodland Heights has one of the few Historic Districts in Houston, Texas, we sought to carefully match the details and scale of the addition to that of the 1920's structure.
For cost effectiveness and ease of construction, the addition was designed to be self-supporting, eliminating any structural alterations to the existing house. The use of a pier-and-beam foundation throughout the addition except at the garage provides a seamless and level transition from the existing kitchen to the new great room. The efficient plan takes advantage of dual purpose spaces: the mudroom is used as a workspace as well as circulation and the incorporation of the stair into the master bedroom visually extends the room while providing views to the west, away from the street. The attic beyond the master bedroom is designed for a future playroom and bath.
